The Career of Jealousy, Confusion and Frustration

Posing with QUT’s robot dog!

Jealousy. It’s emotion that bubbles up when I talk to someone who knows exactly what they want to do when they leave school.

Confusion. It’s the feeling that clouds my mind whenever I hear the words ‘college’, ‘university’, ‘degree’.

Frustration. It’s the pull in my heart when I see a list of career suggestions…and none of them interest me.

Recently I attended a Careers Expo in Brisbane, and, as expected, succeeded in adding to a large list of careers I don’t want to do. I know that the exposure to all different kinds of careers is helpful, but I would also really like to know what direction I’m going in over the next few years.

Quite frankly, I don’t know where that direction is.

When an idea for this blog began swirling in my mind, I was excited for it, and thought there would be so much to write about. But there’s not. I’m confused, and that’s it.

The one thought that is somewhat comforting and somewhat scary is the idea of actually never knowing what you really want to do. Maybe the best thing to do is take one adventure as it comes.

I know that doesn’t help when choosing subjects to study and jobs to apply for, but it reminds me that I don’t need to have every aspect of my life figured out.

And in the meantime, I probably need to attend more career expos and seminars.

Subscribe to my newsletter below by 27 July 2022 to receive 5 ways to help you decide your career.

And what are those five ways, Megan, seeing as you yourself haven’t even chosen your career? I haven’t, I will admit. But I have a pretty good idea, and I’m following my own list!
